Diamonds Aren’t a Girl’s Best Friend: Three Different Gem Stones That Look Great in Engagement Rings
If you’re planning on proposing to your significant other, your mind is probably on one thing and one thing only: the engagement ring. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect engagement ring but don’t want to go with a diamond, there are three types of gem stones that will look equally as beautiful, if not more, than a diamond.
- Sapphire – These gem stones come in both blue and pink, are almost as strong as diamonds, and are most commonly known for their use in engagement rings by the British royal family. For example, when Prince William proposed to the Duchess of Cambridge, he gave her a sapphire ring, the same one that was worn by Princess Diana.
- Ruby – Rubies are known for their deep, red appearance and are almost as strong as sapphires. These gem stones are particularly popular amongst famous musicians. For instance, the Rolling Stones member Keith Richards proposed to his wife with a ruby ring in the 1980s.
- Emerald – Emeralds have a rich history of being used in engagement rings. Jackie Kennedy was known to wear an emerald ring, and Wallis Simpson, the American socialite who was involved with King Edward VIII in the 1930s, also wore one of these rings. Although you won’t see as many emeralds in engagement rings as opposed to sapphires and rubies, they are traditionally the stone of Venus, who was the Roman goddess of love.
